Christa Kiesling AP Lang Block 1 Mr. Snider 6 Nov. 2016 RA1 William Shakespeare, in his historical play Julius Caesar, makes the characters Brutus and Antony utilize rhetorical strategies in order to win the favour of the Roman people for their own purposes. These two speakers try to convince the audience of different things: where Brutus, who speaks first, was trying to subdue the passions of the mob and use logic to win acceptance for his murderous actions, Antony, who had to follow Brutus, was trying to awaken the passions of the mob and stir up the need for revenge. In addition, Antony had the additional challenge that he was not allowed to speak ill of Brutus and his fellow conspirators. To persuade their audience, the characters manipulate the use of persona to move the audience’s perception of themselves, to establish or reinforce the strengths of their positions, and to undermine each other’s arguments. First, both Brutus and Antony use persuasion by manipulating syntax to make the audience relate to and accept certain personas so that they would see the death of Caesar from each speaker’s point of view. When Brutus addresses the Roman crowd to explain why he and the other conspirators killed Julius Caesar, he states, â€Å"Romans, countrymen, and lovers!† (line 24). He uses parallel structure to emphasize the persona that he wants the people to take on. In the mine fiasco case, the company not only suffered financially but the catastrophe pitted the lives of many innocents (Dai, 2004). The company cannot shirk its responsibilities. All these outcomes can be linked to shaky principles and reluctance to adhere to professional ethics (Grace, 2006). When one is within an organisation, one has to keep in mind various nitty gritties of performance. There are certain ethics and rules which are implied in nature which have to imbibed in every employee. One is the scope of work. Another is the line of control. The line of hierarchy needs to be transparent. Decision making needs to be done by managers who are equipped with the required knowledge. Role swapping is sinful and detrimental to business functioning (Hunter, 2012). Before hiring any individual, his role should be clearly outlined and he or she should not be overburdened with any responsibility that does not fit to his or hers expertise. The simplicity to form two morals that are both correct but conflicting is the reason for the division of our nation on affirmative action. Using a persons skin color in hiring is discrimination no matter how society looks at it. At St. Bonaventure University the potential for reverse discrimination became a reality. In May 1994, 22 faculty members were fired, all were male. The president of the university was very blunt about his motive, to protect the small number of women on the university staff (Magner 18). This was purely a discussion based on gender not qualification. No matter how efficient these men were some were fired for not being part of a certain minority. Gary A. Abraham, who was fired as a tenured associate professor stated, It seems ludicrous that t he university can rectify its failure to engage in affirmative action on the backs of its male faculty. Twelve of the men took their complaints to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The commission sided with the men and are even planning to bring the university up on charges themselves (Magner 18). Giving an employer the power to discriminate only towards minorities is unfair and unethical. Now the question is who will the government protect? Society can not consider its self fair when we are still forming decisions based upon gender or race.
